Get To Know Me Through The Liebster Award!

So there’s this super cool thing out in the blogosphere called ‘the Liebster Award’. It’s a virtual award passed on by bloggers to other bloggers…the idea is to connect to and promote other bloggers in the community. I was nominated by Birthe and Brecht from Wandering The World in February (sorry it’s taken me so long to do this guys!…oops!) Birthe and Brecht are a twenty something couple from Belgium currently on a round the world adventure. 🙂

Liebster Award 2016 Rules

These aren’t so much rules but rather guidelines to keep this chain of awards going when you decide to accept the award.

  1. Write a blogpost about your nomination, displaying an image of the award.
  2. Thank the person who nominated you and include a link to their blog.
  3. Answer the 11 questions the person who nominated you asked you in his/her blogpost.
  4. Nominate 5-11 other starting bloggers who you think deserve this award, and come up with 11 questions of your own for them to answer.
  5. List these rules in your blogpost.

These are the 11 questions they asked me…

1. Should we visit your hometown? Why (not)?

I didn’t grow up in a town, I grew up in a tiny hamlet (a teeny tiny ‘village’ consisting of 3 houses) in the middle of the English countryside. So if you like fields, fresh air and lots of farm animals everywhere then it’s definitely worth a visit.

2. What are your three favourite beaches in the world?

I lived in Guadeloupe a couple of years ago, and I have never been to beach as beautiful as St. Anne Beach. The water is crystal clear, the sand so white and there are palm trees dotted around right up to the water. My second favourite probably has to be Kaputas Beach near Kalkan, Turkey. The bay is hidden down between two rocky cliffs – search it on google images! My third favourite has to be Beachcomber island, Fiji. It is so tiny the whole thing is basically a beach!

3. What about home do you miss most when you’re on a long- (or even short-)term trip?

I always miss peanut butter. When my friends and I travelled Asia & Australasia a few years ago, we found a supermarket in Cambodia that sold giant tubs of skippy peanut butter. I bought one and had it in my backpack with me the rest of my trip. I think it ran out in China, and I was so sad. Foreign peanut butter is never the same!

4. What’s your biggest travel misadventure? (Supposing everyone has one.)

The first thing that comes to mind is when I was travelling New Zealand last year. We arrived in Christchurch and found out that the hostel we had booked had collapsed in the earthquake in 2011! This was also the same night as the Cricket World Cup so we tried to find an alternative but every last hostel/hotel/guesthouse for miles around was fully booked. We ended up driving to the airport and begging the security guards to let us stay the night in a room with beanbags. I wouldn’t call this a misadventure though, it was funny!  🙂

5. Which item is a must-pack for every trip?

Tiger balm! If mosquitoes love you then you need tiger balm. I also always take my sleeping bag liner with me and my camera (although I forgot my camera when I went to Belgium for the weekend and was devastated!)

6. What kind of luggage do you usually take when travelling, and how much does it weigh on average?

Usually a backpack, unless I’m only away for a weekend in which case I’ll take a little suitcase. I always over pack, so my backpack usually weighs sooo much. On my first RTW trip, I took a backpack that also had wheels and my friends have never let me live it down!

7. What’s your favourite foreign dish and do you get the chance to eat it back home?

When I was in Thailand, I ordered pad thai basically every night (I always had to ask for mild but it didn’t seem that anyone really understood what I was saying…). I’ve also never tasted Indian food so good as when I travelled India…(obviously). They do the most amazing paneer curries and rotis and it’s all so cheap…!

8. Is there any kind of food you’ll never try?

Anyone that knows me will tell you that I’m petrified of spiders, so I could never try those fried tarantulas that they sell on the side of the street in Asia. Or any other fried beetle/bug! Also chicken feet in China…no thanks.

9. What is in your opinion a destination everyone should have been to at least once in his life?

Swedish Lapland for sure. The most Christmassy, magical place I’ve ever been to in my life. And the colours in the sky are another level!

10. Would you like to move to another country? Why (not)? If yes, where?

I’ve always fancied living in Canada, or New York. I don’t know why though. I’ve never even been to Canada but I’ve heard it is stunning. Maybe one day…

11. What are your travel plans for 2016?

So far this year I’ve travelled to Mauritius, Bulgaria, Belgium, Denmark, Finnish Lapland, Norway & Vietnam. I have a few more trips coming up – Turkey, Finland (again), Italy, Spain & Bulgaria (again) which takes me up to July. Who knows what the rest of the year will bring. 🙂

Swedish Lapland looks beautiful!! I’ve been all over Europe, but never to Sweden. My next European trip will include England and Amsterdam. And I might be a little biased since I grew up in Hawaii… But you totally need to add Hawaii to your list of beaches on here! 🙂

    • 5th June 2016 / 16:08

Swedish Lapland is so beautiful, if you ever get to Sweden you should definitely try to get to Lapland. 🙂 Yes, Hawaii has been on my list for a while, hoping to get there some day soon! It must have been amazing growing up there! 🙂
